About the Temple

On the bank of the Kalpathy river, a tributary of the Bharathapuzha, about 3 km from the centre of Palakkad, stands the temple of Sree Viswanatha Swamy – Shiva as the Lord of Kashi – with his consort Visalakshi. Its riverside steps and its very name recall the great Viswanatha temple of Varanasi, and an old local saying holds that Kalpathy is 'half of Kashi'.

Around the temple lie the agraharams of Kalpathy: long rows of tiled houses sharing their walls, where Tamil Brahmin families have lived for centuries, drawing kolams at their doorsteps each morning. Kalpathy was declared Kerala's first heritage village, and it is famous for Carnatic music and above all for its chariot festival, the Ratholsavam, when giant decorated chariots are pulled through these narrow streets every November.

History & Aithihyam

Local tradition tells of a Brahmin widow, Lakshmi Ammal, who went on pilgrimage to Kashi and brought back a Shiva lingam. Wishing to see a temple like the one she had worshipped in, she is said to have given 1,320 gold coins to the prince of Palakkad and asked him to build a shrine for it on the river bank and to care for it. The details of her story vary from telling to telling, but devotees still remember her as the person who brought Kashi to Kalpathy.

The first firm date comes from a stone inscription near the temple, from the Malayalam year 600 (1424–25 CE), which records gifts made in the presence of Itti Kombi Achan of the Palakkad royal family. The temple is usually said to have been built around 1425, though the inscription suggests it may be somewhat older. A trustee from the old ruling family still manages it.

The temple's worship follows the Tamil Agama tradition rather than the usual Kerala tantric pattern; tradition says its rituals were modelled on the Mayuranathar temple at Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu, and its first priest came from there. Tradition also tells that when the rulers needed priests, Brahmin families were invited from the Thanjavur region; their settlements grew into the agraharams of Old Kalpathy, New Kalpathy, Chathapuram and Govindarajapuram, and the chariot festival grew with them. The Ratholsavam, with its Vedic chanting, Carnatic music and procession of chariots, is today one of Kerala's best-known temple festivals.

    Crowds and best time

The Ratholsavam in November is spectacular but packed, especially on the three chariot days; streets are closed to traffic and it is best to come on foot. Maha Shivaratri is also busy. For a quiet visit, come early in the morning, when the river steps are calm and the kolams are fresh.
